Rangers may look to rekindle transfer interest in Joey Veerman post Nils Koppen appointment

Rangers secured the services of Nils Koppen to replace Ross Wilson and become the club’s new director of football recruitment.

Koppen, who hails from a successful stint at PSV, signifies a significant coup for the club.

With an extensive background in coaching and scouting, his journey from a youth scout at PSV in 2018 to the Head of Scouting showcases a commendable rise within the football management hierarchy.

His successful tenure at Genk, where he managed youth team scouting, has notably created a working relationship with Philippe Clement.

The impact of his scouting prowess was vividly seen in PSV’s dismantling of Rangers in the Champions League qualifiers, with several key players in the PSV side products of his scouting network.

His ability to spot talent, demonstrated by the rise of players like Johan Bakayoko, Joey Veerman, Noa Lang, and Ismael Saibari, is particularly noteworthy.

Of those names, Veerman might be one that’s familiar to Rangers fans, as he was linked with a move to Ibrox in January 2022, per Give Me Sport in December 2021.

There could be a chance that Koppen urges the Ibrox hierarchy to try to make a move once again for the Netherlands international.

In Veerman, Clement would be getting a midfielder who’s “dynamic” and is capable of playing anywhere in the middle of the park.

Given the number of injuries to Ryan Jack and the erratic performances from the likes of Jose Cifuentes, a midfielder signing may be on the cards in the summer.

Whether or not Veerman would want to leave PSV, remains to be seen, but Danilo was tempted to leave a Dutch side to move to Ibrox and Clement will play a key role in trying to make this one happen.

In other Rangers news, the club are bound to face long-term sustainability issues amid a recent £11million development.
