Official Rangers partner backs Philippe Clement in Todd Cantwell row after ‘Massive Call’ v Aris Limassol

Four Lads Had A Dream have chosen sides in the row between manager Philippe Clement and star man Todd Cantwell at Rangers.

Cantwell was hooked after just 36 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Aris Limassol in midweek in a decision the official club partners labelled “massive” at the time, with the boss later explaining it was due to Cantwell not following his instructions on the pitch.

And writing on their official website (2 December), Four Lads have taken the side of the manager in this particular incident but also backed Cantwell to establish himself as the starting number ten in the team and go on to have a stellar Rangers career.

“No matter the walk of life, you can’t disobey the boss either unintentionally or not,” they wrote.

“If he gives you an instruction you follow it, even if you don’t agree, you certainly don’t push back and you certainly don’t argue.

“Football is no different and on Thursday night after 35mins, Todd Cantwell found that out to his cost.

“Todd Cantwell was given a set of instructions to follow tactically, the manager has already explained, he wanted him to provide width and stay wide.

“Time and time again Cantwell chose to come inside and drive centrally with the ball. Time and time again Clement would come out of his technical area and make his feelings clear, he could be seen pointing and telling Cantwell.

“Todd Cantwell can be a huge player for Rangers and can make his desired position his own, he has showed that and he has undoubted ability. Only he can do it though.

“If that means he digs in and is a right winger sometimes, a central midfielder the others then you do it and you prove yourself to this manager and his teammates. After Thursday rightly or wrongly all those questions are fair game.

“Dig in, show your worth and prove yourself to the manager then go on to have a successful flourishing Rangers career. Otherwise you’ll become another player we talk about who wasted a golden opportunity at our club and that list is extensive. It’s up to you Todd.”

Bingo

There is nobody doubting that Cantwell is an excellent player and one of Rangers’ best on his day, but the manager is the man in charge and he wants things done for a reason and in a certain way.

Clement made it clear after the game that he wanted width and when Cantwell wouldn’t provide it, he made a change for the benefit of the team which worked out well as Ross McCausland came on and scored his first senior goal.

From that point on Clement’s decision was justified. Cantwell now has to fight his way back into the team and perform the task the manager wants. If he chooses not to do that, then he would have nobody to blame but himself.

Everyone involved with Rangers wants the club to succeed, regardless of who it is that comes out on top in these squabbles. If Rangers win, the fans win and they won’t care how they managed to get to it.

Cantwell now has to get his head down and let his talent shine through, then all this talk about his attitude and a civil war at Ibrox will disappear.
