Tom English blasts Todd Cantwell for having ‘Inflated sense of his own ability’ after what he did for Rangers v Aris Limassol
Tom English has blasted Todd Cantwell for having an “inflated sense of his own ability” after he was substituted in the first half of Rangers draw with Aris.
Cantwell started on the right-wing but was hooked after just 36 minutes with Aris leading 1-0 at Ibrox and replaced by Ross McCausland, who scored the equaliser in the second half.
But after showing frustration at the withdrawal on the bench, BBC Sport journalist English took to his personal Twitter account (30 November) to show his disdain for the former Norwich playmaker.
“Cantwell is a decent enough player at times, but nowhere often enough for Rangers to rely on him,” he wrote.
“Seems to have a hugely inflated sense of his own ability.”
Missing the point
There’s no doubt that Cantwell wasn’t at his best at Ibrox on Thursday night, and nobody would deny that, but context is important.
Cantwell has been shipped out to the right wing because of his quality, with Philippe Clement clearly believing that he is capable of playing that role well.
But he is out of position and so it’s no surprise that he’s not having the desired effect on games. McCausland is quicker, more direct and a natural winger so bringing him on made a lot of sense.

The issue was more that Cantwell shouldn’t have been the man brought off because Sam Lammers was playing in his best position and dropped an absolute stinker.
Had Lammers been dragged off and Cantwell moved to the number ten role we would’ve been better off, so this belief that Cantwell thinks he’s better than he is is weird. He’s managed to get a group of people disliking him for being good, and now that he’s having a bad run of form they’re latching on to him.
