Ally McCoist blown away by Ross McCausland who ‘looked the part’ in Rangers 1-1 draw v Aris Limassol

Rangers winger Ross McCausland “looked the part” in the encounter with Aris Limassol, according to Ally McCoist.

The 20-year-old scored his first senior goal as the Gers drew 1-1 with the Cypriot club at Ibrox on Thursday (30 November).

The two sides played out the stalemate in the Europa League group stages, leaving the Gers second in the table with one match to play.

McCausland entered the pitch as a 36th-minute substitute for Todd Cantwell, with the youngster then scoring in the 49th minute.

“He’s not looked out of place, anything but,” McCoist said on TNT Sports (9.20pm, 30 November), as quoted by BBC Sport. “It’s different starting of course, but since he’s come on he’s looked the part.”

Bright future

Many eyebrows were raised inside and outside of Ibrox when manager Philippe Clement withdrew fan favourite Cantwell just after the half-hour mark.

Whether it was a personal or tactical decision remains to be seen, but the man in the dugout won’t be getting too many complaints given how McCausland scored his side’s equaliser after Shavy Babicka had put the visitors ahead.

McCausland has come on leaps and bounds under Clement, with the youngster only recently handed his first start for the Gers in their league clash with Livingston.

That was quickly followed by a first start for Northern Ireland, in what has been a rapid rise for a player who didn’t get a look in under former Rangers manager Michael Beale earlier this season.

But while Gers fans will have been glad to see the youngster fire the ball home against Aris Limassol, they will have left the stadium very frustrated, with their Europa League hopes now resting on their trip to Real Betis next month.

In other Rangers news, Clement is working wonders on and off the pitch at Ibrox as Gers contract news emerges.
