Rangers could force Brendan Rodgers out of Celtic as ‘laughing stock’ claim made

Brendan Rodgers would likely be sacked as Celtic manager should Rangers win the Scottish Premiership title this season, according to Peter Martin.

Rangers have recovered from a poor start to the campaign since Philippe Clement succeeded Michael Beale, but they still remain eight points adrift of leaders Celtic.

The Gers have a game in hand to play, however, while they travel to Celtic Park in a month’s time, offering a chance to further close the gap on top spot.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer’s The Journos show [30 November], presenter Martin said: “If they win the league, which they will barring a mass collapse that allows Rangers to win it, that would cost the manager his head, and possibly some of the board.”

Discussing Celtic’s limp exit from the Champions League this week, Martin added: “I think you could spend some amount of money to just give them a chance to win some games, to go away or home and celebrate, to make Celtic Park a fortress, because Celtic Park is a laughing stock right now.”

Chase mode

Even accounting for the underwhelming 1-1 draw at Aberdeen last weekend, Rangers have showed title-winning form under Clement.

The Gers have collected 13 points from a possible 15 under the Belgian, compared to 11 points from 15 for Celtic over the same period.

Rangers

If the season continues in the same trajectory, especially with the next Old Firm now on the horizon, then anything is possible for Rangers.

That really would be disastrous for Celtic, who are out of Europe entirely before Christmas and also fell short in the Viaplay Cup.

Rangers would take great pride in forcing Rodgers out of the club, but there is of course a big mountain still to climb in the league.

All the Light Blues can do for now is focus on their own results and await for further slip-ups across Glasgow.

In other Rangers news, a Gers first-teamer only has himself to blame after a “toxic” claim was made.
