New study finds Rangers and Celtic as most expensive away trips in 2022/23 Champions League

Celtic and Rangers were on average the most expensive clubs to visit for away fans in the 2022/23 Champions League, according to BBC Sport.

The publication reported on its website on Tuesday (28 November) that average prices were just below UEFA’s price cap of €70 for away tickets (£61).

BBC Sport was referencing a study from Football Supporters Europe (FSE), which focused on last season’s Champions League.

Rangers

“Celtic’s average was €69.45 with Rangers marginally lower at €68.85,” according to BBC Sport. “Celtic charged the maximum away ticket price of €70 three times, while Rangers did so twice.”

Expensive trips

Both Rangers and Celtic undoubtedly need the money from such big European nights, so understandably they have tried to make the most of them.

Rangers

They don’t exactly come along every year, as Rangers have shown this season given how they are competing in the Europa League.

The Scottish giants are at a major disadvantage when it comes to Europe’s elite competition given the vast riches of the clubs they often come up against.

And that is shown on the pitch, with Celtic this season for example struggling in Group E with just one point from their four matches so far.

They have another chance to get their first win when they take on Lazio on Tuesday, but that encounter is at the Stadio Olimpico as opposed to Celtic Park.

Rangers meanwhile have had more luck in Europe’s secondary competition, with Philippe Clement’s men currently sitting second in Group C of the Europa League.

In other Rangers news, a BBC journalist has raged over a “daft” incident in the recent 1-1 draw with Aberdeen as a 30-year record was denied.
