Journalist reveals Rangers digs at Celtic Annual General Meeting

Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell took digs at Rangers during the club’s annual general meeting on Wednesday, 22 November, according to Hugh Keevins.

The Daily Record journalist reported on 26 November that he even mentioned a penalty not being awarded to them against Gers since John Greig’s handling of the ball.

Keevins also believes that Lawwell did not handle the club’s business as he should have done.

He wrote: “The toxicity of the relationship between Celtic and Rangers and the opportunity to once again dive into the poisonous nature of it all.

“There’s playing to the gallery then there’s compromising the dignity of your position. And I think Peter’s jibe about Rangers having last had a penalty kick awarded against them when John Greig handled the ball fell into both categories at the same time.

“The club’s annual turnover and exotic level of profitability show the richly rewarded are more than earning their corn. But with that level of remuneration should come a way of conducting the club’s business and Nicholson’s additional dig about Rangers and penalties was another foray into punter territory that was best left alone.”

Always in Rangers’ shadows

These comments just seem to underscore the perennial obsession that seems to persist within the club regarding their arch-rivals.

Despite international football taking centre stage and no SPFL games on, the Celtic leadership couldn’t resist delving into the toxic nature of the Celtic-Rangers relationship, bringing the Old Firm rivalry to the forefront once again.

Lawwell’s jibe about Gers not having a penalty awarded against them since the era of John Greig appears to be more suited for banter in a pub rather than from the executive boardroom.

It reflects a mentality that perpetuates the club’s fixation on Rangers, even when the focus should be on broader football matters.

It seems that Celtic cannot resist taking digs at their rivals when they should be looking at their own problems and finding ways to tackle them.

Rangers need to take these digs as motivation in the coming months and hope that they can capitalise on any slip up as there will be a few from now until the end of the season.
