Ross McCausland to sign ‘strong first-team contract’ to stay at Rangers as details emerge amid transfer interest

Ross McCausland will extend his Rangers contract and is now set to sign a “strong first-team” deal to remain at Ibrox, according to the Daily Record.

The paper reported via their website on 24 November that the 20-year-old will now commit to the Light Blues with the club to confirm the news in the “coming days”.

The Ibrox board were said to have made it their “top priority” to get the Northern Irishman’s future sorted amid 10 days of talks with his representatives, with his current contract due to expire in the summer, and appear to be on the brink of success with the “broad terms” of a four-year agreement reached.

According to the Record it is now just “minor details” which are set to be ironed out in the next few days before McCausland is secured in Glasgow.

Danger averted

With transfer interest widely reported to be developing from England and across Europe there was clearly a threat, and if McCausland were to sign a pre-contract in January before leaving in the summer it would only mean low six-figures in compensation to the club.

Aside from that it would mean Philippe Clement was robbed of the only academy product he currently deems fit for the first team, and the fans of an exciting homegrown talent.

Despite speculation surrounding a return for Ryan Kent in January the manager isn’t currently overwhelmed with creativity out wide, so McCausland’s emergence since Michael Beale left has been a major benefit.

Rangers

Based on the early signs he has showed in his first real run in the senior side it is absolutely the right decision to improve his terms and keep him at the club.

His first start for Rangers was quickly followed by a first cap for Northern Ireland this month, and it appears that a number of clubs have taken notice.

If he signs a new deal and continues on the same trajectory then it might not be too many years before he makes a big-money exit anyway, but for now it is important to ensure he doesn’t go too soon for too little.
