Aberdeen coach Steve Agnew admits Dons are ‘quietly confident’ ahead of Rangers clash

Steve Agnew has said that Aberdeen are “quietly confident” that they will have enough to win their clash with Rangers on Sunday 26 November.

The Light Blues return to Scottish Premiership action with a trip to the Pittodire Stadium, looking to continue their unbeaten start to life under Philippe Clement against an Aberdeen side that were thrashed 6-0 by Celtic last time out.

Despite that trouncing from Brendan Rodgers’ side before the break, assistant coach Agnew believes his side are “more than capable” of taking all three points on Sunday, suggesting they’re coming into the clash full of confidence.

Rangers

As quoted by Aberdeen Live (23 November) he said: “We’re really confident because the players are a terrific group and they respond to all the work that we do. Rangers at Pittodrie on the Sunday lunchtime is as far as we’re looking.

“We’re quietly confident. It’ll be a great atmosphere on Sunday and we know we’re more than capable of getting the result that we want. Obviously, it was an encouraging performance and an encouraging result at Ibrox, but there’s been changes and their results have been good since the new coach has come in.

“We know it’ll be a tough game and we’re all really looking forward to it.”

Quietly confident

Since Clement arrived in Glasgow, Rangers have gone from strength to strength, with the only small mark on the Belgian’s impressive record being a very reasonable draw against Sparta Prague in the Europa League.

The Light Blues should be heading to Aberdeen full of confidence themselves as they have shown in recent weeks that they are capable of beating anybody that they face, even if they aren’t necessarily playing at their best level.

Rangers

Michael Beale’s tenure in Scotland came to an end against the Dons earlier this season, with the 3-1 defeat proving to be the straw that broke the camel’s back for the Englishman. A win against the same opponents on Sunday would show just how far this group have come under Clement.

If Rangers have genuine ambitions of catching Celtic in the race for the Scottish Premiership title, they have to win at Pittodrie. With a five-point gap already in place in the table (if the Gers win their game in hand) the Light Blues have to match if not better the Hoops’ results.
