Positive Ross McCausland contract stance emerges amid Rangers talks with ‘top clubs across Europe’ interested

Rangers are “confident” that Ross McCausland will sign a new contract to secure his future at the club, according to the 4th Official.

The online outlet reported the new positive stance via Twitter on 22 November with the club already in talks with the Northern Irishman over an extension to his deal, which currently expires in the summer.

Interest is hotting up from a number of sources and according to T4O “several top clubs across Europe” are on the 20-year-old’s case, but the Light Blues are currently in line to avoid losing him due to an expiring contract.

The likes of Roma and Atalanta have already been tipped as suitors [Tutto Mercato Web, 21 November] and Rangers would only be due around £350,000 in compensation if he were to agree a deal to leave in the New Year.

Over the line

As a youngster who has finally been given a run in the first-team of the club he supports the likelihood should always be that McCausland is minded to stay at Ibrox.

But if Jose Mourinho is already watching him and potential Premier League interest likely to mean a major pay increase it is impossible to take anything for granted.

Getting this close to the final six months of his current deal has made for an uncomfortable position for the club that probably should have been avoided long ago.

With a matter of weeks until clubs in Europe could start to negotiate with him Rangers need to press ahead with getting the situation sorted before then and not leaving anything to chance.

Whether a new deal automatically means he stays in Glasgow long-term or not would remain to be seen, although it would obviously increase those chances.

At the very least however it would force clubs to pay an appropriate fee to capture the exciting breakthrough talent, which would be a highly necessary silver lining should he depart in light of the recent accounts laying bare how crucial player trading must be to make up for expenditure at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, a proven SPFL goalscorer has now opened the door for the club to sign him in January.
