Rangers: Gary Keown loses mind over ‘absolutely staggering’ £60m+ Ibrox development

Gary Keown has been left baffled by the news that the wage bill at Rangers has reached a club-record £64million.

Writing on page 96 of the Scottish Mail on Sunday on 19 November, the journalist said the increase in wages was the “most significant takeaway” after the club’s annual report was released on Monday (13 November).

He added that the Gers are paying out an “absolutely staggering” amount of money to their staff and that it leaves the players with “no excuses” moving forward.

Prove their worth

It is an awful lot of money for Rangers to be paying out on wages, but the associated costs in football are going up right across the board.

The club’s wages rose by £9million from £55million the previous year and it’s unlikely that figure is going to start coming down any time soon.

It certainly does ramp the pressure up on the Gers players, though, as the wage bill now stands at £3million more than Celtic paid out after their most recent financials were reported.

Rangers

Michael Beale was given pretty much free rein to bring in the players he wanted over the summer and it’s clear that he was also backed financially.

New Light Blues boss Philippe Clement is now the man charged with working with those additions and managing that wage budget, so it will be interesting to see what funds he is provided with once the January transfer window comes around.
