Premier League should have intervened in Nathan Patterson transfer from Rangers to Everton – Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher believes the Premier League should have stopped Everton signing Nathan Patterson from Rangers after their points deduction was confirmed.

The Toffees were hit with the hefty penalty after breaching profit and sustainability rules, having been adjudged to have overspent by £20m.

And Carragher, writing in his column for The Telegraph (17 November), believes the Premier League should have stepped in when Everton signed Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko in January 2022 for a combined fee of £30m to prevent this from happening.

“It is hard to understand how the Premier League could be working with a club to ensure they remained compliant, watching them complete signings such as those for Nathan Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko for a combined fee of around £30 million in January 2022, only to later suggest the club has lost around £20 million too much,” he said.

“Why not intervene at that point?”

Not our problem

Common sense definitely should have prevailed if the Premier League saw Everton overspending and still signed off on them buying Patterson, but that is not our problem.

All that Rangers’ concern should be is getting the full amount owed to them regardless of whether or not other clubs are suing Everton or not, because they have committed to paying a certain amount.

Patterson’s transfer was a record fee at the time and the club lost a top young talent who was earmarked as the long-term successor to current captain James Tavernier, and the only reason we agreed to let him leave was because of that fee.

If the Premier League had stepped in then we wouldn’t have got that cash, but we also would have kept a top talent and arguably would have sold him in to a different club anyway.

Their problems are nothing to do with us, we’ve got our own problems, but we should probably keep an eye on them to make sure we get the money owed to us considering our own financial issues.
