David McCarthy rips into Rangers as ‘Astonishing’ Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers transfer claims made
David McCarthy has ripped into Rangers for their “astonishing” recruitment that means they won’t be able to sell players on in the future.
The club announced a £252,000 profit in their accounts, but the figures included money earned by the sales of Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo and Champions League football from the 2022/23 season too.
And speaking on PLZ Soccer (15 November), the journalist was furious with the club and blasted their transfer recruitment as “absolutely ridiculous” as players like Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers can’t be sold on due to their age.
“It’s absolutely astonishing Peter that in these figures they’re taking into account the money they got for Bassey and Aribo and Champions League football, and they still made a loss,” he said.
“The £252K profit, you can forget that. They made a loss of £4.1m. And the fact is that they sold these players for the best part of £30m and they still made a loss of £4.1m.
“The recruitment has been absolutely ridiculous and guys like Dessers and Lammers are at an age as well that you can’t sell them on.”
Madness
The recruitment at the club has been absolutely poor in recent years and while there have definitely been some good deals done, the majority has been shocking.
It’s clear as day that the club went big during the summer for Michael Beale and after the failures of last season they have made a loss, but they didn’t want to be seen as doing that.

The recruitment clearly hasn’t been good enough in recent years and while we made good money on selling those players, we also lost the likes of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos on free transfers which isn’t good business.
We have to be careful with the money we have, but bringing in strikers in their prime years isn’t something that should be scoffed at – but the fact they’re clearly not good enough for us should definitely be mentioned.
We have to be ruthless in the market and if they’re not good enough move them on as quickly as possible, a bit like Beale did with Antonio Colak, to ensure we protect our finances and can still perform well on the pitch.
