Chris Jack issues ‘hugely significant’ warning as Rangers close in on new hire

Journalist Chris Jack has warned Rangers that they risk being set back “a number of years” if they do not appoint the right technical director.

Rangers are hoping to fill the position – vacated when Ross Wilson joined Nottingham Forest in April – before the end of the month [Glasgow Times].

The appointment comes on the back of the Gers announcing costs at Ibrox increased from £97million to £108m in the latest financial accounts.

Speaking on the Rangers Review podcast [14 November, 15m 45s], Jack said: “Even before Ross Wilson left to join Nottingham Forest, people had been discussing a new man coming in, a fresh approach.

“It’s interesting to see what level of candidate Rangers are able to attract, who the appointment is going to be.

“Getting names at present is difficult because everyone’s keeping their cards close to their chest, but we’ve spoken about the importance of that role.

“That’s been reinforced by the numbers in the accounts, and by John Bennett’s messages in the accounts, so this appointment is hugely significant for Rangers.

“If they get this one wrong, it sets them back a number of years. This one has to be right.”

Appointment imminent

Rangers took a scattergun approach to their summer transfer business and that could come back to haunt them in the long run.

Whereas previously players were bought at a low cost with the hope of selling at a profit down the line, it is hard to see that being repeated.

Jack Butland is one obvious exception, but will the Gers really turn a profit on Cyriel Dessers, Danilo and Sam Lammers, to name just a few?

Whoever is brought in as technical director – or whatever title he is given – they must ensure those spending costs come down.

A lot of that is down to what happens on the field, of course, and missing out on the Champions League proper will hurt Rangers in that regard.

This is an appointment that has dragged on for a while now, but it appears that an announcement will be made over the next couple of weeks.

Whoever it is that is brought in, they need to quickly get their feet under the table and get to work on keeping the club financially stable.

In other Rangers news, a Hearts player has made a transfer claim regarding the Gers after something that happened at Celtic.
