Jo Potter inspired by Rangers Women improvement to reach Sky Sports Cup semi-finals
Jo Potter was inspired by her Rangers Women’s side’s second-half improvement, as the Light Blues reached the semi-finals of the Sky Sports Cup.
Rangers ran out 7-0 winners over second-tier outfit Boroughmuir Thistle on Sunday (12 November) to book their place in the last four of the competition thanks to a Rio Hardy brace, with the rest of the goals being shared amongst the side.
The Light Blues are looking to retain their title having won the Sky Sports Cup last season, but Potter admitted she was disappointed with the manner in which her side started the game before they found their groove in the second half.
Speaking to Rangers TV (12 November) she said: “We always want to start games strong and fast. Even after we scored we didn’t then continue the speed of what we did start, even though we got the goal early from a set piece.
“We didn’t really maintain that pressure and keep them penned in really, we didn’t really move the ball with any intent. That is what we spoke about at halftime, I was much happier with the second half than I was the first.
“It was always going to be a matter of time before we could break them down and them withstand attack after attack. It is always difficult when you play against a low block and a team that sits in and defends very well.”
Find a way to win
If you need any further indicator of just how high Potter’s standards are with Rangers, the fact that the Gers boss wasn’t content with the fact her side only had a three-goal lead at halftime should be as good an indication as any.
Admittedly, Rangers will be expected to win games like this against a lower level of opposition, but the manner in which Potter’s side dispatched Boroughmuir Thistle, especially in the second half was incredibly professional and efficient.

The most important thing in cup clashes is to ensure that you book your place in the next round and Rangers did that and then some on Sunday and they deserve immense credit for continuing to fight on all fronts this season.
Potter was also able to give a few of the younger players in her squad a proper runout with the first team, which will provide those players with incredibly valuable experience. Attention will now return to the league with a crucial clash against Glasgow City up next and an important chance for Rangers to build their lead at the top of the table.
