Stuart Cosgrove and Tam Cowan fume at ‘terrible’ Rangers v Aberdeen decision

Stuart Cosgrave and Tam Cowan have both slammed the SPFL’s decision to award Rangers a higher share of tickets for their Viaplay Cup final with Aberdeen next month.

The governing body announced in a statement on Wednesday (8 November) that Rangers will receive 25,000 tickets for the 17 December showdown, compared to 19,500 tickets for Aberdeen.

It is a decision that has not gone down well, with Cosgrave and Cowan the latest to question why there is not a 50-50 split for the match at Hampden Park.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland’s Off the Ball show, Stuart Cosgrove said: “It’s a terrible decision because it’s exposed to too many people that love Scottish football that there’s an inherent bias.

“When a competition kicks off we don’t know which two teams will get to the final; everybody should feel they’re treated equal.”

Tam Cowan interjected with “absolutely” and added: “We know teams take bigger supports to glamour games. In this case we know Aberdeen could have more at Hampden than they will ever have at Pittodrie for a league game.”

On and on and on

Strap yourselves in, Rangers fans, because there is another month of this chatter to come.

As the SPFL pointed out in its statement earlier in the week, the decision was taken based on previous ticket sales involving the clubs.

Aberdeen will have roughly the same number of tickets as they did for their most recent final in the competition against Celtic in 2018-19.

Rangers

It is easy to see why Aberdeen fans are upset, as they no doubt would have sold more tickets then they have been given, but this is the decision the SPFL opted for.

For all the complaints, having an extra 5,000 fans in attendance at the national stadium will not exactly be the difference between winning and losing.

Of course, from a Rangers perspective it means more supporters will hopefully get to witness Philippe Clement’s men get their hands on some silverware, ending this recent drought.

If that comes at the expense of pundits kicking off between now and then, so be it.

In other Rangers news, an Ibrox figure has given an honest admission on criticism he has received from supporters.
