Rangers perspective shared by talkSPORT host after Celtic ‘thrashed’ by Atletico Madrid

It is “so disappointing” for Rangers to be excited for Champions League matches only to lose heavily, according to talkSPORT host Shebahn Aherne.

The verdict comes after the club’s fierce rivals Celtic were “thrashed” 6-0 by Atletico Madrid in the competition on Tuesday (7 November).

In last season’s competition, Rangers finished bottom of their group with Napoli, Liverpool and Ajax after losing all six of their matches.

“There is a real problem, and there are really disappointed, unhappy, sad Celtic fans,” Aherne said live on talkSPORT, with pundit Alan Brazil interjecting: “There’s no money!”

Aherne replied: “I want to debate that, because actually there has been a record financial result set for Celtic in the 2022/23 season, £120m. That’s more than Feyenoord, who are above them in the group.

“Also you’ve got to look at the financial investment and the recruitment which seems to be a problem. Celtic fans are very unhappy about the state of the club at the elite level.”

Aherne then turned to pundit Ally McCoist, saying: “And Ally you know what it’s like. From a Rangers perspective, it’s such a disappointing night when you’re all excited for the Champions League and then you get thrashed 6-0.”

Bad night

It was a very bad night for Celtic in Europe, with the Bhoys heavily beaten away from home to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

It could, however, have been a very different story had Celtic’s Daizen Maeda not been shown a red card midway through the first half, particularly given how the two clubs played out a 2-2 draw at Celtic Park last month.

Rangers fans certainly know the feeling of losing heavily in Europe, with the Ibrox club losing 7-1 at home to Liverpool last time out.

This time around, however, they are in the Europa League after being knocked out of the Champions League by PSV in the qualifying stages.

And that may be a better outcome for the blue half of Glasgow, who will undoubtedly rather go far in the Europa League than head home early from the Champions League, which looks set to be the case for Celtic.

In other Rangers news, one Gers loanee was “visibly gutted” after a “major moment to forget” for his temporary club.
