Ally McCoist slams Rangers and Celtic in ‘fact of the matter’ verdict live on talkSPORT
Both Rangers and Celtic “should be doing better” in European football, according to former Gers ace Ally McCoist.
The claim comes after the latter lost 6-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League group stages on Tuesday (7 November).
The defeat leaves Brendan Rodgers’s side in last place in Group E, with Celtic drawing one and losing three of their four matches so far.

“We should be doing better,” McCoist said live on talkSPORT. “That’s the first thing you’ve got to say and address. But we’re in a completely and utterly different level of playing field financially.
“We should be producing better youngsters, there are a lot of things we could and should be doing better. But the fact of the matter is, we will not be able to compete with the elite mainly due to finances.”

Not easy
Of course it isn’t easy for Rangers and Celtic to compete against the big guns of European football given the financial situation.
Unfortunately, it may get even more difficult as the seasons go on, meaning the Scottish giants may be forced to look for success in the Europa League.
That is the path that Rangers are currently trying to go down, but the Champions League was still the priority at the beginning of the season, before the Gers were knocked out by PSV.
Celtic meanwhile will continue to give it their all in the premier competition, but their time in this season’s Champions League is rapidly coming to a close, with the Bhoys potentially set to miss out on Europa League football due to their position at the bottom of the table with just two matches to go.
They have, however, shown glimpses of their potential in the competition, notably in their 2-2 draw at home to Atletico last month.
In other Rangers news, one Gers loanee was “visibly gutted” after a “major moment to forget” for his temporary club.
