Scott Wright could play himself into key Philippe Clement role at Ibrox, new Rangers contract could be on cards

Scott Wright looked a goner in the summer transfer window but fast forward a few months and he could well be playing himself into a key Rangers role under Philippe Clement after recent displays.

The 26-year-old was linked with a move from Ibrox all summer and looked destined to follow the likes of Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Fashion Sakala and Antonio Colak out of Glasgow, but for his expected move to Turkish Pendikspor to break down, according to The 4th Official (2 August).

Wright, via Sky Sports in July (19 July), even looked confident and smiling ahead of a potential move away when he was spotted and interrupted for an interview at an airport travelling for talks, in order to break away from his Ibrox first team nightmare.

That was the second time the winger was seen jetting to Turkey in an attempt to complete a move but instead came back empty-handed.

It remained to be seen when he would have played again at Ibrox during the latter stages of Michael Beale’s tenure at the club, but how things change in football with new boss Clement who has handed him a welcome clean slate.

Helped by a lack of options out wide following injuries to Rabbi Matondo, Tom Lawrence and youngster Zack Lovelace, Wright has taken full advantage of his opportunity, having scored a key goal for the Gers in their 3-1 win over Hearts at the weekend.

In fact, he’s featured in all five of Clement’s games since his arrival which is a far cry from barely getting a look in under Beale’s management.

Rangers

Writing on their official Twitter account (6 November), official club partner Heart and Hand admitted that they didn’t want to see Wright in a Ranger shirt again during that incredibly difficult period for the 26-year-old but they’re now hopeful that Clement may be unlocking his talent finally.

Clement may well want to bring in a right-sided attacker in the January window, but Wright has a couple of months before then to possibly delay that decision and his terrific strike against Hearts could well be the injection he needs to revitalise his career again at Ibrox.

Wright’s contract at Ibrox runs out in 2025 and should such performances continue in the coming weeks under Clement’s watch, it’s not entirely out of the realms of possibility that his current deal could be extended.

Wright has not been alone in reviving his Rangers career over the past month, but this is perhaps the most surprising turnaround of the lot and he could also be set for a deserved key role in the coming weeks too.
