Done deal: Rangers agree terms with Zurab Amirian for arrival on 1 January, work permit still needed

Rangers have confirmed the appointment of Zurab Amirian as the club’s new Head of Academy Football.

The Gers announced on their website on Tuesday (7 November) that he has joined the club from OH Leuven, where he was previously Head of Technical Development before recently being promoted to interim assistant first-team coach at the Belgian Pro League outfit.

Amirian will join the Light Blues on 1 January, subject to him being granted a work permit to complete his move to Ibrox.

Progressive

This is a progressive move from Rangers as they look to improve their academy and create a pathway for players to make it into the first team.

It’s an area where the Gers have been lacking over the past few years as there haven’t been too many youngsters that have challenged for a place in the senior side.

Developing their own players will mean there is less reliance on having to bring in a wave of new signings every summer, instead promoting players who have been at Ibrox for a number of years and already have an idea of what it’s all about to play for the club.

The Light Blues said the appointment has come as part of a long-term recruitment process to find someone who fits in with the “culture and vision” of the academy.

Given that Amirian has worked in Belgium for a number of years, there is also a chance that he knows the new boss Philippe Clement already as they look to work closely with each other moving forward.

In other Rangers news, a Gers youngster could be heading out of Ibrox after a development has emerged.
