Kieran Maguire shares Rangers and Celtic verdict in European Super League

Kieran Maguire has claimed that Rangers and Celtic may be invited to join a new, remodelled European Super League, with their size and stature expected to be beneficial to the plans.

The revamped version of the Super League would see three of four divisions of twelve, with promotion and relegation achievable, although Rangers would likely slot into one of the lower leagues.

The finance expert shared his view that, while neither Rangers nor Celtic could compete with the likes of Barcelona or Bayern Munich, having the Scottish giants involved is likely a must.

Maguire was speaking on The Price Of Football podcast [6 November] when he shared: “The European Super League in its latest, or its new manifestation, would probably involve three or four divisions. So there would be promotion and relegation.

“So could Rangers be asked to join it? Yes, they could. And Celtic as well. Let’s be honest, I know Rangers fans don’t want to hear this, but Rangers are a wee bit behind Celtic both on and off the pitch in terms of where they stand at present.

“So Rangers and Celtic could potentially both be invited to join it. If there is going to be four divisions of 12 clubs, how would Rangers feel if they end up in division two or three? The chances are they’re not going to be able to compete with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG, Juventus and other clubs.

“Even some of the smaller countries or the more mid-sized countries in Europe, the likes of Belgium and Portugal and the Netherlands, they do reasonably well in the Champions League.

“So if the Super League is non-England-based, and three or four divisions of twelve, I think it would be beneficial to the competition to have Rangers and Celtic.”

More and more ways to make money

The idea of a European Super League has always been financially driven. The likes of Barcelona and Juventus saw the state their clubs were in and looked for a way to bring in a revenue boost.

In theory, both Scottish clubs could certainly be tempted by the allure of a substantial financial boost, particularly given the discourse surrounding the TV and prize money allocated in Scotland compared with the relative size of the clubs and their fanbases.

The Super League would present a new financial model for Rangers, one that would likely see them receive vast sums of money more than they see at the moment, which could see an improvement in the way the club performs both on and off the pitch.

However, the proud traditions and history of both clubs suggest that they would not sell their soul for financial gain, although as recent years have proved in football, money talks.
