Scott Wright completes remarkable Rangers U-turn – Three things learned in 3-1 win v Hearts

Rangers secured their place in the final of the Scottish League Cup with a straightforward victory against Hearts.

The Gers won the semi-final clash 3-1 at Hampden Park on Sunday (5 November), with James Tavernier (two) and Scott Wright grabbing their goals, with Lawrence Shankland netting for Hearts.

Philippe Clement’s side will now take on Aberdeen in the final of the competition after their 1-0 win against Hibernian on Saturday (4 November).

Here’s what Ibrox News learned from the victory against Hearts:

Wright back with a bang

Gers winger Wright seemingly came very close to an Ibrox exit in the summer transfer window, with Football Scotland (1 August) reporting that the player was expected to complete a move to Turkish club Pendikspor after holding talks.

Obviously a transfer never materialised, and Wright is now a firm favourite of new manager Clement, in stark contrast to his value under Michael Beale.

A half-time substitute at Hampden for Todd Cantwell, Wright rewarded the faith shown in him with a fine goal just 10 minutes later.

Tavernier delivers yet again

While Clement will want his strikers to be scoring the goals, he won’t have too many complaints that it was right-back Tavernier who scored twice against Hearts, particularly given how the strikes came from a penalty and a free-kick.

The captain took his tally for the season to 10, and is now the second-highest scorer across Scotland’s four leagues, as per BBC Sport.

Ibrox board deserve praise

The Ibrox board haven’t exactly got many important decisions spot on in recent times, but CEO James Bisgrove and chairman John Bennett definitely deserve plenty of praise for their decision to hire Clement.

As per Sky Sports (15 October), it was a straight shoot-out between the Belgian and Kevin Muscat to replace Michael Beale, and it looks like they made the right call, with Clement unbeaten from his first five matches in charge.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has spotted something that could “go a long way” for one “beleaguered” Gers player.
