Rangers mocked for Lewis Ferguson transfer failure with Bologna star set for ‘big-money transfer’
Gary Keown has mocked Rangers for their failure to sign Lewis Ferguson from Hamilton or Aberdeen before he joined Bologna in 2022.
On Friday night (3 November), the 24-year-old midfielder became the joint-highest-scoring Scottish player in Serie A history as he scored in Bologna’s 1-0 Serie A win over Lazio.
Ferguson is a well-known boyhood Rangers fan. His father Derek played for the Light Blues, as did his uncle Barry.

Mail on Sunday columnist Keown cannot believe that Rangers failed to sign the midfielder before he left for Italy and has also hit out at the protracted process of hiring a new director of football at Ibrox.
Writing in the Scottish Mail on Sunday on 5 November (page 100 and 101), Keown said: “Now established as the joint top-scoring Scot in Serie A history alongside Denis Law, no less, and destined for a big-money transfer in the summer, it is unlikely Lewis Ferguson spends his nights wondering why his boyhood team Rangers never, ever saw him as a serious proposition.
“Rangers, on the other hand, as they revamp their scouting department again and continue their glacial creep towards finding a direct of football, ought to pin a photo of the 24-year-old’s exquisite winner for Bologna against Lazio on Friday night above the door of their analysis room, or wherever, as a reminder of where their priorities perhaps ought to lie.”

Unbelievable
Ferguson would be one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership if Rangers signed him and the Govan club might have won more silverware in the last couple of years if they did.
The Hamilton-born ace is flying in Italy with three goals and four assists in 12 appearances across all competitions this season for Bologna.
The attacking midfielder even got to wear the captain’s armband for his team in October when he assisted a goal in a 3-0 win over Empoli.
Bologna haven’t lost a Serie A match since the opening-day defeat to AC Milan and Ferguson has played a massive role in that.
Rangers do have a player who plays in a similar role to Ferguson in Todd Cantwell but we have to be honest and say that the former Aberdeen star, who has very strong personal ties to Ibrox, would be a better option.
Unfortunately, the ship has probably sailed in terms of trying to sign the midfielder.
He’s destined for a Premier League move now unless a bigger club in Italy tries to snap him up.
What a massive shame for Rangers.
In other Rangers news, the Gers want to hire this Liverpool chief.
