Neil McCann blown away by what ‘very special’ James Tavernier did for Rangers in 3-1 win v Hearts

Neil McCann labelled Rangers defender James Tavernier a “very special talent” after his free-kick against Hearts.

The right-back scored the set-piece from range in his club’s 3-1 Scottish League Cup win over the Edinburgh side on Sunday (5 November).

Tavernier also scored from the spot in the victory at Hampden Park, with winger Scott Wright also on the scoresheet.

“Tavernier is a very special talent,” McCann said live on BBC Sportsound (4.26pm, 5 November), as quoted by BBC Sport. “He just hits it so accurately with so much power and dip that it goes right into the top corner.”

Stunning goal

It certainly isn’t the first time that Tavernier has stepped up from distance to fire in a free-kick for the Gers, and this one may not even be his best given his special highlight reel from such situations.

But importantly for Rangers and their manager Philippe Clement, this one came in a huge match for the club, helping them secure a place in the Scottish League Cup final.

It was a stunning strike, and it came not long after the captain scored the opening goal of the match from the penalty spot, where he showed great composure after missing one against the same opposition last weekend.

Tavernier missed a penalty in the Scottish Premiership meeting with Steven Naismith’s side last Sunday (29 October), but also scored a penalty as the Gers won 2-1.

Clement’s men now have a great chance to lift some silverware, with Aberdeen awaiting the Ibrox club in the League Cup final.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has spotted something that could “go a long way” for one “beleaguered” Gers player.
