Michael Stewart fumes at Todd Cantwell after Rangers clash v Hearts

Michael Stewart has fumed at Rangers playmaker Todd Cantwell for his defensive efforts in the ViaPlay Cup semi-final win against Hearts on Sunday 5 November.

The playmaker was booked in the opening 45 minutes for a stray arm on Alex Cochrane, albeit there wasn’t much in the incident, it was probably the right call.

Stewart took aim at Cantwell, insisting it was a “silly” foul to make when the ball wasn’t really going anyway around the halfway line at Hampden Park.

Speaking live on ViaPlay on Sunday 5 November, Stewart was not impressed with the efforts of Cantwell to try and win the ball back in the middle of the park.

“I need to see the replay, but one thing for certain, it’s a free-kick,” he said [15:30].

“It’s a needless one, it’s silly from Cantwell, going clattering into the back of him. He does have his arm up on the back of him, it’s clumsy.”

Busy.

Cantwell is known for his attacking ability on the ball, but he does not shy away from a challenge, something that often gets him into trouble.

Philippe Clement likes the high press and getting in the face of the opposition, something that Cantwell will do all day, so he isn’t likely to tell him to be careful.

That tenacity is always good off the ball, but there were so many moments, especially in the opening half where Rangers could have done with it while in possession too.

Stewart is obviously known for overreacting, but given that Cantwell was taken off at half-time, maybe the threat of further action was noticed by Clement too.

That change made everything happen though with Scott Wright at the heart of it as the Bears went on to romp to a 3-0 win and book their spot in the final next month.
