Alan Hutton stunned by James Tavernier in Rangers win v Hearts in ViaPlay Cup

Alan Hutton was left stunned by James Tavernier as he smashed home his second goal for Rangers in the 3-0 win against Hearts in the ViaPlay Cup semi-final.

The skipper stepped up as the set-piece king yet again at Hampden Park, smashing home a penalty, followed by a wonderful free-kick into the top-right corner.

Hutton labelled the effort as “outstanding” as the Bears booked their spot in the final next month against Aberdeen with a wonderful second 45 minutes.

Speaking live on ViaPlay coverage of the clash [5 November, 16:25], Hutton was absolutely stunned by the free-kick that put the cherry on top.

“It’s an outstanding strike from James Tavernier,” he said.

“I wondered was it too close? No, it was not. Zander Clark just takes a step to his right and then he can’t get back. Take nothing away from that strike, that is outstanding.”

Rangers

Wow.

It doesn’t get much better than this from the skipper, who has made a career of doing this every single week.

People may say it is easy to score this many goals when you take penalties, but taking them out of his tally, Tavernier has still scored over 50 goals for the club, and that’s before adding assists.

The second goal was sensational, no one can take that away from him, with the distance to goal making sure that was the only spot that he could really hit.

Tavernier did just that and despite that late penalty scored by Hearts, that second half was comfortable and the demolition job needed was completed within 15 minutes of action.

Philippe Clement clearly got stuck into his side at half-time and his words had a massive impact on everyone, and that is the clear difference under his management.

Long may this continue.
