Rangers ‘sanctions’ update emerges after incident v Dundee, football chiefs set for summit

Scottish football chiefs are set to join a summit this month on the increasing use of pyrotechnics in grounds after an incident in the Rangers game at Dundee on Wednesday (1 November), according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported on page 78 and the back page of its print edition on Friday (3 November) that the Gers are “unlikely” to be sanctioned after their fans’ use of pyrotechnics halted the game for 19 minutes.

It added that clubs have previously not been punished if they could show they had “taken reasonable precautions”, with Police Scotland launching an investigation to find those responsible and the SPFL set to conduct its own probe into the incident.

Clamp down

It’s no real surprise that the authorities are looking to clamp down on pyrotechnics as there has been an uptick in their usage inside football grounds in recent years.

While they can often look appealing on the eye amongst a crowd of fans, there is no doubt that they can be dangerous and have caused injuries in the past.

Most supporters will accept that it was completely unacceptable for the Rangers game against Dundee to be halted for 19 minutes after what unfolded at Dens Park.

Police Scotland warned that it’s “only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured” and you can imagine they’ll be taking a much stricter approach on the matter moving forward [Daily Record].

It doesn’t look as though the Light Blues will be sanctioned following this particular incident, but if a similar event occurs in the future, the outcome is probably likely to change.
