Sky Sports share statement live on air after Rangers fans incident v Dundee

Sky Sports News reporter Luke Shanley has provided an update from the SPFL regarding the use of flares by Rangers fans against Dundee.

The Scottish Premiership clash at Dens Park on Wednesday [1 November] was halted just two minutes in due to the smoke alarms being set off.

Both sets of players exited the field and play eventually resumed more than 15 minutes later, with the Gers going on to register a 5-0 victory.

Shanley read an on-air statement from the SPFL on Thursday [2 November, 10:43], with the Gers awaiting to see if they will face any action from authorities.

“The extensive use of pyrotechnics at the match at Dens Park is very concerning and unwelcome,” the statement read.

“The disruption to the game is obviously extremely regrettable.

“We await the delegate report and will be liaising with Police Scotland on the incident.”

Delays

The use of flares at Scottish stadia was made illegal earlier this year, so it is understandable that this incident is being looked into.

Even more so when you consider the game had to be halted by 15 minutes, having already been delayed by 45 minutes due to traffic congestion.

While it helped generate a superb atmosphere, supporters know better than to set off flares inside grounds.

Exactly what action will be taken against Rangers – if any – remains to be seen. The supporters responsible will also face action if identified.

Hopefully, just a warning is given to the club and those responsible now know better – there is a reason flares are now banned, after all.

The last thing Rangers want right now is for this matter to overshadow positive events on the field, with Philippe Clement still unbeaten.

There is more than one way to go about creating a buzz at away games – the use of flares unfortunately is no longer one of them.

In other Rangers news, Jim White was embarassed by an incident involving Gers supporters.
