Jim White embarrassed by Rangers incident as he rages on talkSPORT, ‘They managed to mess up big time’

Jim White says Rangers fans “managed to mess up big time” by halting their game with Dundee after setting off flares in the stands.

Both sets of players were taken off the pitch and the game was only allowed to resume more than 15 minutes later due to the smoke alarms being set off.

It came after the game, in doubt all day due to poor weather, was delayed by 45 minutes due to traffic congestion around the stadium.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Thursday [2 November, 10:20], White said: “They managed to mess up big time in my view.

“Two minutes in and pyrotechnics were lit and the game was held up for 18 minutes after it set off the stadium fire alarm.

“Are the Old Firm doing their best to embarrass themselves right now?”

Illegal

Rangers fans know how to create a great atmosphere, which was also the case in Wednesday’s [1 November] Scottish Premiership clash.

But these were not really the circumstances to let off flares, with the various delays meaning the game finished well over an hour later than planned.

Indeed, the use of flares inside Scottish stadia was officially made illegal earlier this year, so individuals could be facing police action.

Rangers

Rangers may also now be the subject of an investigation, but hopefully there are no serious ramifications.

All that said, to suggest Rangers fans have ’embarassed themselves’ is a little harsh.

White was also referencing Celtic’s Green Brigade – a self-styled ultras group – but this does not come into the same category.

Did Rangers supporters cross the line? Possibly. But they cannot be lambasted for creating brilliant atmospheres around the country.
