Michael Stewart slams Cyriel Dessers, Rangers man ‘couldn’t lace’ boots of Hearts ace Lawrence Shankland

Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers “couldn’t lace” the boots of Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, according to Michael Stewart.

The Hearts ace scored the opener in the Scottish Premiership meeting between the two clubs on Sunday (29 October).

But goals from James Tavernier and Danilo helped complete a turnaround as the Gers won 2-1 at Ibrox to move five points behind Celtic.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound (4.33pm, 29 October), as quoted by BBC Sport, Stewart said: “Cyriel Dessers couldn’t lace Lawrence Shankland’s boots.”

The Hearts striker is someone that new Rangers manager Philippe Clement admires, according to talkSPORT host David Tanner (27 October).

Massive win

Dessers certainly didn’t have his best game, with the summer signing hooked at half-time for fellow summer arrival Danilo.

And it was the latter who was the hero of the day as his 93rd-minute header secured a massive win for Clement’s side.

The hosts were in real danger of falling further behind fierce rivals Celtic in the league table, with Shankland’s early goal looking like it would be enough to clinch a win for Hearts at one point.

The Edinburgh outfit then looked to have done enough to secure a point after Tavernier netted a penalty in the 89th minute.

But they were heartbroken after Danilo nodded in from a Tavernier cross in the dying seconds, sending Ibrox into a frenzy.

The new man in the dugout remains unbeaten from his first three matches in Glasgow, having also beaten Hearts’s rivals Hibernian in the league and having drawn with Sparta Prague in the Europa League.
