Filip Helander moots Rangers return next year when current contract expires

Filip Helander has mooted a potential return to Rangers once his current contract at Odense expires next year.

Speaking to the Daily Record on Saturday (28 October), the Swedish international, who experienced an injury-ravaged 18 months before leaving the Gers at the end of last season, said he is hoping to have a good season with the Danish side after recently returning to full fitness.

The 30-year-old added that he will see what happens at the end of his current one-year deal and hinted that he could re-sign for the Light Blues on a free transfer next summer.

“I’m not aware of the injury I had at all, which is great,” said Helander. “And I think I can still achieve a lot in the game. That’s something I have in my mind. I try to set goals in terms of what I want to do.

“I’m only 30 so hopefully I have a good few years left in me. Because I was out for a long time it’s almost like I feel more healthy now. It’s about making up for lost time. That’s how I’m trying to look at it. I hope to have a good season here in Denmark and see what happens after that.

“I’ve only signed a one-year deal at Odense. They weren’t certain whether I’d be fit or not. So it was a good place to hopefully get game time. Could I come back to Rangers for free next summer? You never know…”

Interesting

It’s great for Helander that he has managed to work his way back to full fitness after enduring what was an awful last couple of years at Ibrox.

He didn’t make a single appearance for Rangers last season after a series of injuries kept him out of action before he was released when his deal came to an end.

The centre-back must have been in some dark places during that time, but he will be delighted to just be back out on the pitch and feeling healthy.

It sounds as though he is determined to get his career back on track and prove that he can still perform at a decent level this season in Denmark.

Whether or not a move back to the Gers would be a possibility is anyone’s guess, but football is a funny old game and you never know what could happen.
