Pundit shares what made him ‘cringe’ in Rangers 4-0 win v Hibernian as Pep Guardiola claim made
Pundit Tam McManus cringed at Hibernian trying to play out from the back in their recent match against Rangers.
The Gers overcame the Edinburgh outfit 4-0 at Ibrox in their Scottish Premiership meeting on Saturday (21 October).
The match represented a debut for new Rangers manager Philippe Clement, who has succeeded Michael Beale in the Ibrox dugout.
“Every time the keeper had the ball the Hibs centre-halves split to take possession and that was the cue for me to cringe and the Rangers players to press,” McManus wrote for the Daily Record.
“It’s essentially the essence of a coaching quandary, if Pep Guardiola has his defenders playing out from the back then that’s great and a billion pounds well spent.
“You can play whatever way you want with great players, Hibs don’t have a billion pounds so they need to find another way and just be prepared to go long.”
Tough lesson
Hibs manager Nick Montgomery was handed a tough lesson by Clement and Rangers at Ibrox, with the hosts running riot in the league clash.
The travelling manager will have been very disappointed at his side’s poor display, with his opposite number surely delighted.
The Gers scored four times and also kept a clean sheet in a fine all-round performance, one that was very much-needed after a difficult time for the Glasgow club.
It really could have been a different story for both sides, particularly given Hibs’ very good run of form going into the match.
But Clement laid down a marker from the very first whistle, with the Ibrox faithful in full voice as they urged their side to an important three points.
Montgomery now has a chance to redeem himself against Rangers’ fierce rivals Celtic, with the pair meeting each other in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday (28 October).
