Paul Mitchell named as ‘most exciting’ Rangers sporting director candidate as ‘big plus’ claim made

Paul Mitchell is the “most exciting” sporting director option for Rangers, according to Daily Record journalist Ross Pilcher.

Mitchell is currently unattached, having previously worked with new Gers manager Philippe Clement at French side Monaco.

The Glasgow outfit have not had a sporting director since Ross Wilson departed for English club Nottingham Forest in April.

“The former Monaco sporting director has been linked with Ibrox before,” Pilcher wrote for the Daily Record. “Having worked with Philippe Clement at Monaco, an existing relationship with the current boss may be a big plus in Rangers’ favour.

“However, Mitchell could be a man in demand now he’s unattached. Manchester United are reportedly considering him if John Murtagh is to move on. And Mitchell’s track record of identifying and selling players makes him an attractive candidate for a host of clubs.

“On paper, he would be the most exciting to Rangers fans and given his situation, perhaps the most available.”

New sporting director incoming?

The sporting director job at Ibrox comes with plenty of pressure, with the most recent incumbent Wilson coming under a lot of scrutiny for some of the decisions he made.

Wilson also gained praise due to some successful transfers, but he has left a gap at Ibrox following his switch to the Premier League.

That gap was filled by previous manager Michael Beale, who dominated the headlines in the summer transfer window with his recruitment at Ibrox.

The boss brought nine new faces to the club, with the majority failing to have any impact at the club, which played a key role in Beale losing his job.

Former Monaco and Club Brugge manager Clement is not in the hot-seat, and will undoubtedly look to create his own squad in the coming years, if indeed he lasts that long.

He will, however, have to wait until the January transfer window to start brining in his own players, while perhaps moving on some dead wood at the same time.

In other Rangers news, Clement must put the Gers board under pressure to sign one ace as transfer news emerges.
