Journo makes Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers prediction after ‘bruising’ Rangers experience under Michael Beale

Cyriel Dessers was playing with the “weight of the world on his shoulders” under Michael Beale but both he and Sam Lammers can improve after a “bruising” time at Rangers, says Scottish Daily Mail journalist Brian Marjoribanks.

Both players were signed by Beale in the summer but their underwhelming performances were cited as part of the reason for his sacking, with Philippe Clement appointed in his place.

Striker Dessers scored just his second league goal of the campaign as the Clement era began with a 4-0 rout of Hibernian at Ibrox on Saturday (21 October), while Lammers missed a good opportunity to get himself on target.

Writing in the Daily Mail on Tuesday (24 October, page 64), Marjoribanks commented: “Dessers has looked like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders this season but scoring his second league goal of the campaign should help. Sam Lammers squandered a huge opportunity to record his second goal of the season when he cracked the ball against the post, but he looks far more at home in the No 10 position and he caused Hibs problems.

“This was a match that should help nurture the self-belief of players like Dessers and Lammers after a bruising last few weeks at the end of Beale’s tenure.”

Time to grab the chance

The impact of Clement was instantaneous, albeit there obviously needs to be an element of caution with most new appointments experiencing the famed “new manager bounce”.

But it was a welcome relief to see Rangers leaving behind the slow, plodding, predictable, sideways passing football that had become associated with the end of Beale’s tenure at Ibrox.

Clement himself was keen to temper expectations despite such an impressive start under his leadership, and the boss will know there is plenty of work to do with the team.

That too goes for Dessers and Lammers, two players who lacked serious confidence under Beale. Clement knows he needs to get a tune from a strike force that was rebuilt under Beale but never clicked for him.

It is still extremely early days but a bit of confidence from the start will do both players, and the team as a whole, the world of good.
