Jo Potter challenges Rangers Women to ‘kick on’ after Celtic win takes Light Blues top of SWPL
Jo Potter has challenged her Rangers Women’s team to “kick on” following their dramatic comeback win over Old Firm rivals Celtic.
The Light Blues came from 1-0 down on Sunday (22 October) to beat their Glasgow rivals 2-1, with goals from Kirsty Maclean and Rio Hardy restoring Potter’s side to the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League and a point above the Hoops.
For Potter, it was her first league experience of the fixture since taking over as Rangers manager over the summer and while she was pleased with her team’s performance, she knows that this is only the start for the Light Blues.

As quoted by Rangers’ website (22 October) she said: “We are really pleased; I think you can see towards the end that it means a lot for us to win these games. I think you see the character in the players.
“You can either crumble and concede another goal or you can take the game to them and roll your sleeves up and go for it. Thankfully that is the side of the girls that we seen today and that just shows huge character for us.
“We knew we didn’t need to change much; we knew we could still hurt Celtic going the other way and it was just trying to get the players to believe in that and bring it out on the pitch.
“We have to take confidence because we are the only unbeaten team in the league. We go a point ahead of our rivals, unbeaten in the league and performances are matching those results. If there is one thing we can do is take heart from that and kick on from now going into a nice international break then I am not sure what else we could do.”
On top
Rangers have hit their stride under Potter in the last few weeks and it is hard to see where they are likely to slow down as they are not only winning almost every game they play, but they are performing with a level of confidence that is so encouraging.
While Sunday’s win over Celtic may not have been the goal fest that was produced against Hibernian or Montrose Ladies in recent weeks, it could prove to be even more important as beating the likes of Celtic and Glasgow City is what ultimately decides who wins the title.

Rangers may have a one-point lead over the Hoops, but they also now have a better goal difference and have a head-to-head win and in a division as congested as the Women’s Premier League, these could be crucial factors in the closing weeks of the campaign.
But what should be most satisfying for supporters is the fact that Potter is not content having won a single derby this year and she wants her side to kick on and continue to improve. At the end of the day, nothing is won in October and there is plenty more football to be played in the coming months.
