Cyriel Dessers makes ‘unbelievable’ admission over Rangers teammate Todd Cantwell

Cyriel Dessers hailed Todd Cantwell’s “unbelievable” assist for his goal in Rangers’ rout of Hibernian and says his teammate’s introduction helped turn the screw on their opponents

The Light Blues started life under Philippe Clement in a 4-0 rout of Hibs, with much-maligned Dessers scoring the final goal at Ibrox with 11 minutes to go thanks to a fine bit of play of Cantwell.

Speaking to Rangers TV, in quotes reported by The Herald (22 October), Dessers was full of praise for the impact Cantwell had when brought off the bench just before the hour.

“When Todd came on you could see his quality. I saw Tav (James Tavernier) making the run as he always does, and he pulled two defenders with him, so I became free at the last moment,” Dessers said.

“It was an unbelievable pass from Todd to find me, I faked the shot, before putting it into the corner. I’m really happy about the goal.”

Time to kick on

It was great to see Rangers start life under Philippe Clement with such a resounding victory and hopefully it can act as a real marker for the rest of the campaign after such a poor showing this term under Michael Beale.

Dessers was one of the players synonymous with the underwhelming performances under the ex-gaffer, putting in a series of poor performances since joining from Cremonese in the summer as one of nine arrivals.

Indeed, his goal against Hibs was just his second of the season in the Scottish Premiership, a return that he badly needs to improve upon moving forward if he is to win over the supporters and help Rangers close the gap on Celtic in the title race.

But this was a start and maybe playing under his fellow Belgian Clement he can enjoy a new lease of life at Glasgow and begin to find some consistency in front of goal.
