Journalist makes Rangers admission amid Philippe Clement opportunity at Ibrox

Dean Jones believes Philippe Clement knows what it is going to take to be successful at Rangers after being appointed as the new manager at Ibrox.

Speaking to GiveMeSport on Wednesday (18 October), the journalist said the Belgian is joining the Gers at a time when he has an opportunity to take the team in “one direction” after things have been “so bad” recently.

He added that from what he’s heard from the 49-year-old, as well as his personality and coaching credentials, he can push the Light Blues back towards challenging for the SPFL title again.

“The manager has a very good track record at some clubs that you could take seriously,” said Jones. “He knows what it’s going to take to be successful at a club like Rangers.

“There’s not an immediate attachment to the support base, but he is coming in at a time when he has got an opportunity to take the team in one direction. Things have been so bad recently that, surely, this team can only move upwards.

“I think Rangers really need this appointment to be right because there have been a lot of changes in the last few years, and they need some consistency. From what I’ve heard of him so far, his personality and coaching credentials can really push Rangers back to where they expect to be, which is challenging to win the Scottish Premiership.”

Fresh start

This is a fresh start for Rangers on the back of a difficult couple of months that have seen the club largely go backwards under Michael Beale.

One of the biggest challenges the new Gers boss has on his hands will be trying to get the best out of the signings the Englishman brought in over the summer.

There are a number of players that have been short on confidence this season as the side largely lacked a plan and any real direction under the previous manager.

Clement has solid previous experience managing in Belgium, where he won three league titles with Genk and Club Brugge, before taking on the Monaco job.

He will be confident that he can come in and have an immediate impact at Ibrox as he looks to salvage what has been a pretty disappointing start to the campaign.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has shared an “absolutely massive” opportunity for Clement at Ibrox.
