Rangers make formal approach to hire Sam Jewell with Brighton decision expected - Fabrizio Romano

Rangers have made a formal approach to Brighton Head of Recruitment Sam Jewell, to become the Ibrox club’s technical director, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer specialist reported via his Twitter account on Wednesday (18 October) that Jewell is still considering the offer as the Light Blues continue their restructuring following the appointment of Philippe Clement.

Jewell is not entirely convinced by the opportunity and is currently assessing his options as it would see him depart the Seagulls at arguably the most important time in their history, having done an “excellent job” as they compete in the Europa League under Roberto De Zerbi.

Big step

Rangers’ transfer business this summer was a mess from top to bottom as Michael Beale was afforded a lot of control over which players to target during the transfer window and that has left the Light Blues with a mess of a squad that has no real clear identity.

Jewell would be an excellent addition and a step in the right direction for the Gers to fix those issues and begin to sort out the mess of the squad that is Currently at Ibrox, as well as find the right additions to strengthen Clement’s squad in the upcoming transfer windows.

The job that he has done at Brighton has been excellent, consistently identifying talent from areas of the globe that other teams haven’t even monitored and it has allowed the Seagulls to create a genuinely competitive Premier League and Europa League outfit under De Zerbi.

Whether or not the project to take over at Rangers will be able to pull him away from his work on the south coast remains to be seen as Brighton are fighting on all fronts currently and Jewell may be keen to continue his work and see the project through.

If James Bisgrove, John Bennett and the rest of the Ibrox board can pull this off in the coming weeks, this could be just as important an appointment as Clement as manager for the future of Rangers.
