Todd Cantwell shares how Rangers’ dressing room reacted to Michael Beale sacking
Todd Cantwell has shared you could have heard a pin drop in the Rangers dressing room when they were told Michael Beale had been sacked, such was the shock among the players.
The midfielder revealed that, while he wasn’t there for the game, he’d heard that if anybody had broken the silence, somebody would have “lost their mind” in reaction.
He also led with the caveat that some things that have been said amongst the players should remain amongst the players out of respect for the people involved, so one can only speculate about what was said.

Speaking to The Beautiful Game Podcast [16 October], Cantwell revealed: “Obviously with my injury, I’d been having some treatment, so I wasn’t at the [Aberdeen] game.
“Obviously, it goes without saying I spoke to the lads – I think certain things that are said in football should stay in football out of respect for the people.
“From my understanding, you could hear a pin drop in the changing room. I think it was one of those moments where any word is going to be received wrong. Even if you were to say ‘this is rubbish…’ any word somebody’s going to jump on it.
“Silence is the perfect remedy for this because if anyone speaks now someone’s gonna lose their mind.”

New horizons
The reactions of the players are a sign that while things weren’t right at Ibrox and Beale did need to go, it was a difficult one to take for much of the dressing room.
With an overhaul of new players in and old faces leaving during the summer, plenty of the players at the club including Cantwell himself had only been there under Beale, and there seems to have been a level of uncertainty about life without him.
The podcast episode was clearly recorded before the news of Philippe Clement’s hiring had broken, with no comment from Cantwell on that front, but it is now time for the players to get their heads down and push on with improving under the new boss.
Clement has a week to work with his players ahead of a visit from Hibernian, and he will be looking to brush aside the cobwebs from Beale’s tenure and get off to a fast start at Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, a BBC pundit has claimed a star player would jump at the chance to leave Ibrox.
