Chris Sutton predicts problem Philippe Clement already faces at Rangers

Chris Sutton has claimed the biggest problem Philippe Clement will face in his early days at Rangers is the players that were brought in over the summer transfer window and getting them firing.

Sutton shared that while his record at both Genk and Monaco is a big positive for Rangers, he will be judged in the early days based on what he does on the training ground and says in the dressing room,

The former Celtic striker stated Clement will need to hit the ground running at Ibrox in what is a tough environment, which will be made harder if their Glasgow rivals improve, but he needs to get more out of the players.

Speaking on the BBC Monday Night Club podcast [16 October] Sutton stated: “I think his track record is a big thing. The fact that he’s won three titles in Belgium I do think is a really important thing. He did okay at Monaco.

“It’s simply about what he says, it’s about if he comes in and talks basic football sense on the first day, and then it’s about his training sessions, the way that he coaches. Then it’s about the way he talks in the dressing room.

“Going into that environment in Glasgow, it’s a tough environment, he’s got to hit the ground running which is difficult because I don’t think Celtic have been at their best this season and I think they will get better.

“The biggest issue he has is the players Rangers recruited. They haven’t really shown up this season and he’s got to get more out of those players.”

Lots of work to do

The new boss already has plenty of work to do at Ibrox as he looks to turn their fortunes around after a horrible start to the season under Michael Beale which is sure to have dented the confidence of several players, particularly those that arrived in the summer.

The likes of Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers have failed to get going at Ibrox, which caused a problem for the previous boss, and Clement will now take on the task of getting them to perform to his standard.

Ultimately, if the players do not pick up their game under the new boss then success is impossible. The entire club, including the new boss and his inherited players, want to achieve things at Ibrox, and they will need to work together to reach those goals.

If he can get the players fit and firing under his leadership, there is always an opportunity for success, and it will be seen in his first days at the club whether his impact makes that difference.
