BBC Sport journalist shares ‘big’ problem Philippe Clement must ‘tackle’ to succeed at Rangers

Philippe Clement must “tackle the injury problems” to succeed at Rangers, according to BBC Sport journalist Andy Campbell.

The former Monaco and Club Bruges boss has been appointed as the club’s new head coach on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The Belgian takes over from Michael Beale, who was sacked by the Gers earlier this month after a poor start to the new season.

“Perhaps this is a direct topic for the medical staff, but there is a big issue for the incoming manager to address in terms of the number of injuries Rangers have had in the last two seasons,” Campbell wrote for BBC Sport.

“They are competing on domestic and European fronts and can ill-afford to have so many players sidelined.”

Rangers

Unfortunate

Injuries can, at times, be avoided, but there is, of course, a strong element of bad luck involved, with Rangers on the unfortunate end of several injuries already this season.

Losing key players at key times certainly had an impact on Beale, but the man in the dugout should still have had enough top quality players to step in when important players were sidelined.

A big squad is needed if the Gers are to successfully compete in all competitions, and Clement definitely has that at his disposal.

Keeping them fit, however, will be a challenge, with the fixtures coming thick and fast in the coming months. The likes of Rabbi Matondo, Ryan Jack, Todd Cantwell, Tom Lawrence and Danilo have all had injury problems in recent times.

Of course the new man in the dugout has more than one problem, with injury issues just part of the challenges he will face at Ibrox during his tenure, which he is desperately hoping will be hugely successful.

In other Rangers news, Clement is already facing a “tall order” as Andy Walker makes a Celtic claim.
