BBC pundit delivers Ibrox exit verdict as Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland linked with Birmingham City transfer

Carlton Palmer has issued a verdict on Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland as Birmingham City are reportedly keen on signing him.

Sun journalist Alan Nixon reported on 14 October that English club wants to sign him as new manager Wayne Rooney is a fan of the 30-year-old.

The English goalkeeper moved to Ibrox on a free transfer this summer and has enjoyed a stellar time between the sticks for his new side.

Palmer, who’s a pundit for the BBC, told Football League World, “Wayne Rooney is apparently looking to bring in former England colleague Jack Butland, the Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper.

“Jack started his career at Birmingham City, Jack joined Rangers after leaving Crystal Palace when Mick Beale took charge.

“I think Jack would jump at the chance of working under Wayne, and at 30, he’s six years younger than the current experienced Birmingham City goalkeeper John Ruddy.

“I don’t necessarily think Jack is a better goalkeeper than Ruddy but at 36 now, with Wayne looking to grow the club, the ages of the players will be an important factor and part of his thinking.”

Keep him

Butland’s one of the few signings this summer that actually looks the part and he’s undoubtedly one of the most important players.

Philippe Clement will certainly not want to sell one of his top players and there certainly will be talks needed if Butland does want to leave.

However, nothing so far has been reported about the Englishman wanting to leave.

Birmingham and Rooney are well within their rights to target him and it all depends on whether or not he fancies leaving at this stage.

Palmer does appear to be making predictions rather than acting on information he’s received from the Gers dressing room.

Hopefully, they decide to move on to another target as it seems unlikely Rangers will let him go without a fight.
