Steven Davis could be binned off by Philippe Clement if Rangers hire Belgian

Steven Davis could be binned off by Philippe Clement, if Rangers opt to appoint the Belgian as their next manager, according to the Daily Record.

The former Monaco manager and Kevin Muscat are the final two names in the running to succeed Michael Beale at Ibrox and relieve Davis of his duties as interim manager, with the Northern Irish midfielder taking charge of the Light Blues’ last two matches.

There had been plenty of speculation that Davis would be kept on as Clement’s assistant coach if he were appointed, but that could be set to change should the Belgian arrive in Glasgow with his vision and specific coaches to fit his needs.

Clement has been open about his ideas on fitness within his squad and therefore he may bring his own coaching staff with him to suit his particular style, which could leave no place for the current Ibrox incumbent to join his backroom team.

Buy-in

Davis’ short tenure in charge at Ibrox was by no means an overwhelming success, with Rangers winning one and losing one of his two matches at the helm, including an embarrassing 2-1 defeat in the Europa League at the hands of Aris Limassol.

He has become part of the furniture at Ibrox having had two spells in Glasgow and it would be a shame for him to depart the club entirely if Clement is named as the new manager having suffered a major injury last year as a player.

But if Rangers want to recover from their poor start to the campaign and begin their quest to finally catch Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, they need to completely buy into their new manager’s principles, whether it be Muscat or Clement and that includes adopting their methods.

Rangers

Fitness hasn’t been an obvious issue so far this season, but it is quite clear that all these players are not up to speed with the levels that are required to be a success at Ibrox and Clement and his coaching team appear to have the skills required to improve the squad in that manner.

Hopefully, there will be some capacity in which Davis can remain with the club, perhaps a coaching role with one of the academy sides could see him build up to take on the role on a full-time basis in the future.

In other Rangers news, Nicolas Raskin has admitted that his move to Ibrox was just a step in his goal to reach the Premier League
