Stephan van der Heyden to join Rangers as well as Philippe Clement

Rangers are hiring Stephan van der Heyden as Philippe Clement’s new assistant manager, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist reported via Twitter on Sunday (15 October) that the 54-year-old has agreed to join Clement’s new backroom staff in Govan after holding previous roles at Lokreren and Club Brugge in Belgium.

Van der Heyden’s most recent job was as the assistant manager of Kerala Blasters in India.

Clement’s team assembles

There’ll no doubt be more additions to join Clement’s new team at Rangers in the coming days but ban der Heyden is a good start because he’s someone who’s been around the block a bit as an assistant manager.

As long as he doesn’t come back in a year’s time to be the full-time Gers manager, all is well.

Van der Heyden played as a midfielder for Club Brugge and Belgium in his playing days before heading into coaching in the early 2010s.

He’s held a number of assistant and scouting roles all over the world, from Belgium to Macedonia and Jordan to India.

Clement is likely to know van der Heyden from his days at Club Brugge because Clement served as the Brugge interim manager while van der Heyden was there.

It’ll be tough for Clement and van der Heyden to get Rangers back in the Scottish Premiership title race but at least they have what should be a straight route to winning the League Cup to boost confidence going into the New Year.

We expect there to be some additions from Belgium in January and from there, who knows?

In other Rangers news, one Ibrox favourite could be finished after the Clement appointment.
