Eight-figure contract details shared as Philippe Clement chooses Rangers over foreign club

Philippe Clement rejected a €15million (£13m) contract offer from Al-Shabab to instead take over as the new Rangers manager, according to Het Nieuwsblad.

The Flemish outlet reported on its online edition on Sunday (15 October) that Clement would have earned the sum over the duration of the two-and-a-half-year deal.

Clement was officially confirmed as Michael Beale’s successor at Ibrox on Sunday (15 October), with the Belgian signing a contract that runs through until the end of the 2026-27 campaign.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported on Twitter (15 October) that the reason Clement rejected the offer from Al-Shabab was because of family reasons.

Refreshing

It is not known how much Rangers will be paying Clement during his time in Glasgow, but you can be sure it does not come close to the amount being offered by Al-Shabab.

In many ways, it is refreshing to see a manager or player turn down the advances of a mega-rich club from the Middle East – family reasons or otherwise – to instead take on what is, let’s face it, a bigger and better job.

The interest from elsewhere in Clement is likely to be the main reason behind Rangers taking so long to reach a decision on who was best placed to replace Beale.

Kevin Muscat was the other candidate in the running after the lengthy shortlist was whittled down to two names earlier this week, but it was Clement who ultimately got the job.

Now that this managerial appointment saga has come to an end, the former Club Brugge and Monaco manager can finally get to work at Auchenhowie.

In other Rangers news, Clement will reportedly meet with the Gers squad for the first time on Monday (16 October).
