Kris Boyd rages at Rangers ‘disaster’ as he reacts to Philippe Clement hire live on Sky Sports

Kris Boyd has welcomed the appointment of Philippe Clement at Rangers after the “disaster” he witnessed during the Michael Beale era.

Former Monaco boss Clement saw off competition from Kevin Muscat to officially become the Gers’ new manager on Sunday (15 October).

The 49-year-old takes over from Beale, who was sacked two weeks ago to the day after a disappointing 10-month spell in charge.

Speaking to Sky Sports News on Sunday [15 October, 12:14], Boyd said: “Whatever happened under Michael Beale, it was a disaster to be totally honest in terms of the money spent and the players not having an impact.

“When you look at the squad, yes the numbers are there, but the competition for places isn’t – hence the reason why it’s become stale recently.

“With the new manager coming in, it gives every player a clean slate and an opportunity to get themselves in the team. I’m sure we’ll now see players improve their performance.

“Clement is going to be here for a period of time; Rangers can’t afford to sack a manager again. They need to build something – hence the contract to 2027.”

Over to Clement

Beale was heavily backed in the summer as nine new players were brought in at a reported combined cost of £13million, although that figure was disputed by the Englishman.

Regardless of the initial fees, five of the new recruits were given contracts through until 2027, while Danilo’s runs through until 2028.

Given none of the new signings – arguably Jack Butland aside – have covered themselves in glory so far, the Gers could be made to pay the price for years to come.

It also means that Clement will likely have to use those players available to him for the rest of the season at the very least, rather than splashing out more cash on more players in January.

That is assuming no clubs come in for any Gers players in January, and on the basis of the first few months of the season, it is tough to see that being the case.

The hope now is that, with Clement finally in place, Rangers can belatedly get the most out of their recent arrivals and get their season back on track.
