Igor Biscan emerges in Rangers new manager hunt at eleventh hour

Ex-Liverpool defender Igor Biscan has surprisingly emerged as a late candidate for the Rangers manager job, according to The Sun.

The newspaper reported on Saturday night (14 October) that Biscan, 45, wants a manager’s job in the UK after being sacked by Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb in August, just four months after he was hired despite winning the Croatian league title.

It is understood that Biscan was ” on the shortlist for the Rangers role” but it seems as though even though he’s been named as being in the race at this late stage, it’s unlikely he’ll be hired.

According to Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack, either Philippe Clement or Kevin Muscat will be announced as Michael Beale’s successor by the end of play on Monday.

Interesting late twist

It’s surprising to see a name thrown into the hat so late on in the process because Biscan hasn’t been mentioned before.

Since hanging up his boots in 2012 after a playing career that saw him win the 2005 Champions League with Liverpool, Biscan has stepped into managed.

He’s taken charge of Rudes, Olmipja Ljubljana, Rijeka, Croatia’s Under-21s and, most recently, Dinamo Zagreb.

In 2017/18, he won the league and cup double in Slovenia with Olimpia and then won the Croatian Cup with Rijeka in 2018/19.

After a four-year stint in charge of Croatia’s Under-21s, Biscan then returned to club management in April when he was hired to replace Ante Čačić when he was sacked for losing in the semi-finals of the Croatian Cup.

Biscan then saw out the season and helped Dinamo win the Croatian league title but he was inexplicably sacked in August when Dinamo lost in Champions League qualifying against Greek champions AEK Athens.

He may have been a good fit at Rangers due to his experience of winning trophies in a nitty-gritty European league and the fact that he has links to a top Premier League club in Liverpool.

The ex-Croatia defender may want a role in British football soon and he may get it based on his track record.

It’s just not going to be at Ibrox.
