Mark Wilson shares what Ibrox sources insist about new Rangers manager hire

Mark Wilson has shared that Ibrox sources insist that they are still conducting talks with more than one candidate in Rangers’ search for a manager.

Writing in the Scottish Daily Mail on Saturday [14 October, page 101], Wilson confirmed that the Light Blues search for Michael Beale’s successor is nearing its conclusion, with Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat, the final two candidates in the race for the Ibrox hot seat having been interviewed by John Bennett and James Bisgrove.

Various reports had suggested that former Monaco head coach Clement was set to be offered the position [Alan Nixon, 13 October], but as Rangers conduct their final interviews before making a decision, sources close to the club insist that they are still considering multiple candidates.

Discussing the current position of the search for a new manager, Wilson wrote: “Having previously removed other candidates from the running – including ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard – Rangers this week conducted a final interview process.

“Ibrox sources have insisted that talks with more than one candidate remain ongoing.”

Could go either way

Rangers have been clear throughout this entire process that they were going to take their time to ensure that they got the right person to lead their club back to a period of success, especially having parted company with both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Beale in the space of only 10 months.

It feels as though the board could genuinely go either way with this decision as both managers have impressive CVs that show their success across the globe in different leagues. Muscat has done incredibly well in Australia and Japan, while Clement’s record with Club Brugge was outstanding, so it is hard to pick who would be the better fit even after the lengthy interview process.

Rangers

The time has come for a decision to be made however with the game against Hibernian and the end of the international break fast approaching, you would have to imagine that the board have to be swaying to one potential candidate more than the other, even if they’re considering both still.

Whoever is ultimately chosen is going to face a tough task getting a tune out of these Rangers players after a difficult start to the campaign where many of the side have looked far off of the pace required to be competitive in the Scottish Premiership and the Europa League.
