Kris Boyd tells next Rangers manager what he should do straight away to Ibrox players when hired

Kris Boyd has said that the first thing the new Rangers manager should do at Ibrox is ensure that all the players are on his side.

The search for Michael Beale’s successor at Ibrox is coming to its end, with former Monaco manager Philippe Clement and ex-Rangers defender Kevin Muscat the final two managers under consideration to take over the reins in Glasgow, with a decision expected by Monday 16 October [Daily Record, 14 October].

A decision is expected to be made in the coming days as the Ibrox board decides which candidate would be the better fit to help the Light Blues try and recover from their dreadful start to the campaign, but former Gers forward Boyd believes rallying the players is the most important task for the new manager.

Writing for the Scottish Sun on Saturday (14 October) Boyd said: “The first thing the new manager must do when he walks through the door is get everybody onside. In any squad, there will always be players out of the picture, so the whole group needs to be singing from the same hymn sheet.

“I genuinely don’t see any bad eggs or anything like that in this group. They are just massively underperforming and short of any confidence at the moment. The next gaffer has to come up with a plan to get them firing again.

“Sounds simple, but if it was that easy we would all be top managers.”

Get them firing

One of the biggest criticisms that has been levelled at this Rangers side is their lack of firepower at the top end of the pitch, alongside the seeming lack of interest to try and turn around the club’s fortunes as Beale’s side too often rolled over under the littlest of pressure.

Whoever takes over, whether it be Clement or Muscat needs to ensure that they can get this side to care once again when they step on the pitch, because far too often this season, the Rangers players have just gone through the motions and been pulled apart by their opposition.

Beale was sacked because of those indifferent performances and none of the players have had to suffer because he has been the focal point of supporters’ criticism. Now that he’s gone, fans will turn on players if a new manager continues to face the same issue.

This is one area that Muscat may trump Clement in, as the former defender knows the club inside and out and knows what it means to play for Rangers. If anyone should be able to rally a squad together it should be the man known for giving his all on the field.

Whether he’s the man appointed or Clement, these Rangers players need to play for their new manager and he needs to get them up for the challenge.
