Pundit issues verdict on new Rangers manager amid Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat updates

Barry Ferguson has issued his verdict on the next Rangers manager as the shortlist now seems to be down to Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat.

He believes that either of the two managers will walk in with the backing of the fans and wants him to stick around for the next three or five years.

In his view, Gers need to build for the long term and not just look for short-term achievements.

Rangers

He told Go Radio: “Rangers have done the process with four or five managers, whittling it down to two and then there will be second and third interviews. That’s why they have taken their time, to make sure they get it spot on. The Rangers fans will demand that.

“I look at both of them (Clement and Muscat) and they both have good experience. I know what type of character Muscy is, there’s been a lot made of his hard man persona and he was a tough cookie on the field, but a very intelligent guy as well. He thought a lot about the game and he’s went on to be a manager for eleven years now. He’s no novice.

“Clement has won trophies, went to Monaco was third in the first season then they’re sixth and he got dismissed. The two of them are pretty close, and whoever gets the job will get the backing of the fans. It needs to be the right guy because it’s been a revolving door for too long, too many managers. I firmly believe this new manager needs to be long-term, needs to be here for the next three to five years.”

Spot on

Short-termism has not gotten Rangers anywhere and they looked like they were building something substantial under Steven Gerrard.

However, since he left for Aston Villa, no other manager has managed to take the squad to the next level.

In fact, the team’s regressed under their stewardship and it’s time for a serious manager to come in and make things right.

Rangers

It’s good that they’re taking their time with Muscat and Clement as they need to be sure about who the one is that fits the bill perfectly.

Both have their plus points and if the Clement appointment takes place along with the Paul Mitchell one then that could be the better option.

Mitchell can sort out the mess behind the scenes and also bring some structure to Rangers’ transfer activity.

In other Rangers news, an award-winning manager has now asked his representatives to set up an interview with the Ibrox hierarchy as he aims to succeed Michael Beale.
